"The River Doesn't Keep Time"
2025
clay pigment on paper
This work explores the relationship between landscape, memory, and material through pigments created from stoneware clay gathered from the land. Using handmade clay washes in place of traditional watercolor, the painting transforms the river into both a physical place and a vessel for remembrance. The muted earth tones allow the material itself to become part of the landscape it depicts.
Viewed from the bow of a bass boat, the composition invites the viewer into a quiet journey through water shaped by time and place. Rather than documenting a specific location, the work reflects on how land carries memory and how natural materials can preserve personal, cultural, and ancestral histories. It represents an early exploration of the material language that continues to define my studio practice.
